Coiled and Neutral: What should your setter look like?
Clinician Christy Johnson-Lynch of Iowa State goes over several aspects of the setter’s position that are critical for an effective setter:
-
Coiled body position: the setter should have a slight bend in the knee, a flat back and poised to step forward or back by being on the toes. Never stand up straight with flat feet.
-
Square up to the target. The setter’s shoulders always point where the set will be going. The feet are slightly separated and the hands create a high window for the ball.
-
When finding the ball: Beat the ball to the spot, square the shoulders to the target, and then set. A setter should always get to the ball as quickly as possible to be poised and ready for the set.
